Few apps manage to break into the US market this quickly. Since its launch last September, Muse — Meta's AI-powered digital companion — has recorded more than 10 million downloads within the United States in just forty days. That figure places the app in an exclusive club of only twelve apps across the entire history of app stores, according to data from market analytics firm Sensor Tower.
The Numbers Behind the Surge
Muse's total downloads reached roughly 10.9 million, 10.2 million of which came from the US market alone. An insights analyst at Sensor Tower notes that only 11 apps have achieved a comparable milestone following their launch — the most recent being Meta's own Threads in July 2023. The rest were mostly mobile games rather than utility or productivity apps.
In terms of actual engagement, daily active users crossed the 2.5 million mark for the first time on October 16, a 15% increase over the previous week. The app also held the number one spot in the US App Store for nearly the entire period, with the exception of a single day when the streaming app Kick edged ahead before Muse reclaimed its position. On Google Play, it has topped the charts for the past thirty days.
How Did Meta Build This Momentum?
This success isn't the product alone — it's the result of the enormous distribution and marketing machine Meta commands. The company draws on a user base of roughly 3.6 billion daily active users across its apps, the same formula it previously used to launch Threads, which was built on Instagram's social graph with its content integrated into Facebook and Instagram.
This time, however, Meta added a massive advertising investment:
- The company devoted 39% of its total October ad spend to promoting Muse, up from 23% the month before.
- Muse climbed to become the 21st largest brand in the United States by ad impressions, after ranking 73rd in September.
The Real Test: User Retention
Downloads are only an initial indicator; the more meaningful measure is whether users stick around once the initial excitement fades. On that front, Muse's performance stands out against its rivals:
- 7-day retention rate: 30% for Muse versus a 19% average for competitors.
- 14-day retention rate: 23% for Muse versus a 16% average for competitors.
The competitor set in this comparison includes ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok — the leading conversational AI apps currently on the market.
Comparing Against ChatGPT's Launch
Measured by US figures over the first 40 days, Muse leads by a wide margin: ChatGPT logged roughly 3.7 million US downloads in the equivalent period after its launch, while Grok didn't exceed half a million, and Claude stopped at around 200,000.
Globally, the picture looks different: ChatGPT reached nearly 15 million worldwide downloads in its first 40 days. But the comparison is uneven for two reasons: first, Muse is currently available only in the United States and Canada, and second, ChatGPT benefited from strong interest in large markets such as Japan, Brazil, and Germany — with Japan alone accounting for about 25% of its global downloads during that period.
What Does This Mean for the AI Market?
Muse's story reveals a truth that has become increasingly clear in the AI market: winning is no longer about model quality alone, but about a company's ability to get that model in front of users. Meta combines three rare assets simultaneously: an enormous user base, in-house distribution channels, and an advertising budget large enough to reshape app store rankings within weeks.
Even so, the fundamental questions remain open: Will those high retention rates hold up after six months? Will the app sustain its momentum as it expands into new markets where Meta faces local competition and stricter regulation? And will this large user count translate into genuine, sustained daily usage — or prove to be a passing experiment?
The answers to these questions will determine whether Muse becomes an established product in the AI assistant market or merely a bright but temporary marketing success. In either case, its trajectory offers a practical lesson for companies and organizations: the best technologies don't spread on their own. They need a carefully considered go-to-market strategy just as much as they need solid technical development.
