The Pentagon Launches Its Own Version of ChatGPT and Grok for Military Use

In a move reflecting the rapid expansion of generative AI tool adoption within major government institutions, the U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon) has announced the launch of customized versions of the most prominent AI models, foremost among them ChatGPT from OpenAI and Grok from xAI. These versions were designed specifically to meet the «warfighter's needs» and are now available to roughly three million civilian and military employees within the department.

A Unified and Secure AI Portal

The two new versions — known as ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government — fall under the umbrella of a central platform the department launched last year called GenAI.mil. The goal of this platform is to give Department of Defense employees access to advanced commercial AI models without passing sensitive government data through the usual consumer channels.

The military versions are distinguished by being exempt from the data collection practices that are difficult to avoid in tech products aimed at ordinary consumers, giving them an extra layer of protection and privacy. When the platform first launched, it began by offering the Google Gemini model before expanding to include new models.

Wide Adoption Among Employees

According to the department's figures, the platform has enjoyed remarkable popularity since its launch, recording more than 1.7 million unique users out of three million employees within the department. This number reflects the growing desire to leverage AI tools to accelerate administrative and operational work.

What Does the Military Version of ChatGPT Offer?

The ChatGPT Mil version emerged from the «OpenAI for Government» program, and it offers a familiar experience for users of the commercial version of the app. The tool focuses on a set of core functions, most notably:

• Text-based conversation and direct interaction.
• Handling files and organizing projects.
• Creating custom GPT models as needed.
• Supporting document-heavy, non-classified routine tasks, such as administrative work, logistics, planning, and policy development.

The department noted that additional features will be added gradually over time.

The Grok Version with a Broader Military Character

By contrast, the department presented the capabilities and uses of the Grok model in language more inclined toward a military character. According to the official statement, the Grok for Government tool — which operates within SpaceX's Starshield AI network (a secure satellite network based on Starlink technology) — will deliver immediate productivity gains, better continuity in knowledge flow, and more secure and efficient collaboration.

The department added that this tool will enable its forces to carry out tasks faster and with greater accuracy across multiple operational contexts, ranging from analyzing market research for procurement specialists to managing supply chains for logistics officials.

A Notable Absence of the Anthropic Model

What stands out in this move is the absence of Claude, the model from Anthropic — an absence not without significance. The Trump administration classified the company as a «supply chain risk,» a classification the company is fighting in court to challenge. This came after Anthropic refused to grant the Pentagon unrestricted use of its tools, insisting instead on certain safety controls.

Multiple Alliances to Boost Capabilities

These new versions come as part of a broader effort by the Pentagon to employ AI in accelerating operations and giving the department a competitive edge without compromising security. In this context, the department has struck agreements with a number of major tech companies, including:

This diversity of partnerships reflects a strategic orientation toward building an integrated AI ecosystem within the military establishment, while striving to balance leveraging the latest commercial models with protecting sensitive data.
