Superpose App: An AI That Teaches You How to Take the Perfect Photo
By Admin
Artificial intelligence is no longer limited to generating images from scratch; it has become a virtual instructor guiding users to capture more beautiful photos. Amid this trend, a new app called "Superpose" has emerged, relying on artificial intelligence to teach people how to choose the right pose in front of the camera, in an attempt to solve a problem many struggle with: getting a good personal photo.
What Is the Superpose App?
Superpose is an iOS-exclusive app developed by two former TikTok employees, Melody Cho and Jing Liu. The app functions as a smart camera; the user takes a selfie or a photo of a friend, and the app generates four suggested poses using artificial intelligence.
Some of these poses are creative and somewhat exaggerated, and at times may appear a bit unnatural. Nevertheless, the app gives the user the option to save the generated poses, or to use the "Match Pose" feature to try to mimic the suggestion and position themselves within the frame in the same way.
An Idea Born from a Personal Problem
Melody Cho recounts that the idea for the app stemmed from a simple everyday frustration; her husband was unable to take decent photos of her. She said she began wondering whether this problem could be solved through advances in computer vision and generative artificial intelligence, so she decided to take on the venture herself.
Cho has extensive experience in product development at major companies such as Meta, Roblox, Slack, and TikTok. Her partner Jing Liu worked as a founding engineer at a startup specializing in 3D face scanning, then moved on to developing image and video models at TikTok.
Numbers and Performance
The app was launched last July, and has since achieved promising results, the most notable of which can be summarized as follows:
- The number of downloads exceeded 22,000.
- Users generated more than 190,000 photo poses.
- The app allows five free generations per day.
- An additional pack of five generations can be purchased for $2.99, or twenty generations for $9.99.
Focusing on the Real Moment, Not Fantasy
Cho is aware that other companies have entered the AI-powered photography field, but she believes Superpose has a different vision. The app does not seek to generate fake backgrounds or place the user in imaginary locations they have never visited; rather, it focuses on improving real personal photos.
Cho explained that the goal is to capture the lived moment and the genuine memory, emphasizing that there are many apps that excel at placing users in imaginary scenes, but Superpose wants to remain faithful to documenting the actual experience.
Not a Competing App, but Part of a Broader Wave
Superpose comes as part of a growing trend in the smart photography sector. Last year, Google launched a "Camera Coach" feature in Pixel phones to guide users on framing and composition, while in July Adobe introduced a feature in its experimental camera app that critiques photos and suggests adjustments before capturing.
Cho acknowledges that some suggested poses may appear unnatural at present, and affirms that the team is working on improving generation and customization methods, in addition to developing better ways to guide the user directly through the camera lens.
Funding and Investors
The startup raised $2.2 million in funding from several parties, most notably Khosla Ventures, the Chinese company Meitu, which specializes in phones and selfie apps, in addition to OVTR VC. This investment interest reflects a belief that AI-powered photography is a promising market, especially with users increasingly relying on personal photos in their daily lives.
In conclusion, Superpose represents a model of how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to solve simple everyday problems and turn them into practical products. As competition in this field continues, the biggest challenge facing these apps will remain making suggestions more realistic and seamless in a way that truly serves the user.
