In a move reflecting a tangible shift in the venture investment landscape across emerging markets, Peak XV Partners — one of the most prominent venture capital firms active in India and Southeast Asia, managing assets exceeding ten billion dollars — has announced an increase in its investment cap for startups through its seed platform "Surge." This announcement comes alongside the unveiling of a new cohort comprising eighteen startups.

A Higher Investment Cap and a Bigger Bet on Early Stages

The new cohort is known as "Surge 12," the first to operate under the higher investment cap of five million dollars per company, compared to three million previously. The firm has injected more than fifty million dollars distributed across the cohort's companies, which collectively raised over ninety million dollars in seed funding rounds.

Rajan Anandan, Managing Director at the firm, believes that the criteria for securing Series A funding have risen noticeably, in addition to the emergence of capital-intensive companies — particularly in the deep tech space — that seek to raise larger rounds at the seed stage itself.

Growing Geographic Expansion

With each new cohort, the "Surge" platform moves toward greater globalization; the current cohort's companies span geographically from San Francisco to Sydney. Although more than half of the companies are based in India, only five of them focus on the Indian market, while the remaining thirteen target global markets, highlighting the distinction between where a company is founded and the market it aspires to serve.

Since its launch in 2019 — when the firm operated under the umbrella of "Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia" — "Surge" has backed more than 180 startups founded by entrepreneurs from over eighteen nationalities. The firm notes that the ten largest companies to emerge from these cohorts now generate combined annual revenues exceeding one billion dollars.

Profiles of the Targeted Entrepreneurs

Anandan describes the "Surge" platform as the firm's main channel for seed investment, while it remains an investor in the companies during subsequent funding rounds. The founders it bets on often fall into the following categories:

  • Entrepreneurs who have previously founded ventures.
  • Operators with deep operational experience.
  • Technical founders specializing in niche fields.

Those coming from operational roles at established tech companies make up about 50 to 60 percent of each cohort.

Diverse Sectors in a Single Cohort

The companies in this cohort cover a broad spectrum of fields including artificial intelligence, robotics, space, consumer products, healthcare, music, and fintech. Among the most notable participating companies:

  • Alma: Building a personal computing platform aimed at making computer use faster and less costly, with its founders coming from a research background at Microsoft.
  • August AI: A healthcare platform that combines artificial intelligence with physician-led care, serving more than nine million users in 160 countries.
  • Ditto: An AI-powered dating tool within the iMessage app, which raised $9.2 million in a previous seed round led by Peak XV.
  • HiLoop: Helps AI companies adapt open-weight models for specific applications through a post-training platform.
  • Puralink: Developing autonomous robots capable of navigating within underground pipe networks.
  • Reinforce Labs: Building tools to evaluate enterprise AI systems and test, identify, and remediate their vulnerabilities.

It is worth noting that at least three companies in this cohort had previously raised outside funding — some of it from Peak XV itself — before joining the platform, reflecting a shift in the nature of companies joining seed accelerator programs.

Reading the Landscape

This trend reveals a broader direction in the venture capital world, where startups are moving toward raising larger amounts from their earliest stages, driven by the rising cost of developing advanced technologies and the tightening criteria of subsequent rounds. For an investor like Peak XV, raising the investment cap grants it a stronger presence in promising companies from their earliest moments and reinforces its position in upcoming growth rounds.
