OpenAI Recruits Executive from Meta Amid Rising Pressures in India

The artificial intelligence arena is witnessing accelerating activity in the Asia-Pacific region, as OpenAI has succeeded in attracting one of the most prominent executives at social media giant Meta, in a move that reflects the growing ambitions of the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot in Asian markets. This transition comes at a sensitive time when Meta faces stringent oversight from Indian authorities.

A Notable Leadership Move

OpenAI announced the addition of Sandhya Devanathan, who held the position of Vice President for India and Southeast Asia at Meta, to its ranks after a career spanning more than a decade within the company. Devanathan will be based in Singapore and will report directly to OpenAI's Managing Director for the Asia-Pacific region, Kiran Mani.

According to what the company disclosed, the new executive will assume wide-ranging responsibilities that include:

• Leading the growth of the individual user base and expanding enterprise adoption of the technology.
• Managing strategic partnerships and dealing with regulatory bodies.
• Overseeing operations in Southeast Asia and Australia.

Devanathan had joined Meta in 2016 and rose through several leadership positions, including managing the gaming sector in Asia-Pacific, before being appointed Vice President for India and Southeast Asia in the middle of last year.

Accelerating Expansion in Asia

This appointment is not an isolated event but comes as part of an organized expansion campaign led by OpenAI in the region. Just days before Devanathan's arrival, Prabhjeet Singh was appointed to head the company's operations in India, coming from Uber where he spent more than ten years leading its business in India and South Asia.

Over the past two years, OpenAI has opened offices in a number of major Asian capitals, including Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney, and New Delhi, in a clear indication that the region has become a central pillar of its global expansion strategy.

In contrast, Meta will see a reorganization of its administrative structure following this departure, as the company's Managing Director in India, Arun Srinivas, will report directly to Benjamin Joe, the company's Vice President for the Asia-Pacific region.

Escalating Regulatory Pressures on Meta

This shift coincides with a difficult period for Meta in India, as it faces growing pressure from official bodies over issues related to digital safety and content management. Earlier this month, the company was forced to issue an apology after Instagram mistakenly restricted a post by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which prompted the government to summon Meta executives.

The criticism did not stop there, as New Delhi raised serious concerns about the spread of child abuse content across the company's platforms. Indian authorities had requested clarifications from Meta following a press report that revealed advertisements on Instagram allegedly providing access to this type of content.

In response, Meta confirmed that it had removed the violating advertisements and accounts, and denied deliberately targeting such advertisements based on inappropriate interests. It also indicated that it had deleted about 160,000 accounts in India over six months based on indicators pointing to exploitative activity targeting children.

A Race for Influence

This scene reveals a new dynamic in the tech sector, where emerging AI companies compete to recruit leadership talent from social media giants, benefiting from the accumulated experience in understanding local markets and dealing with complex regulatory environments. India and Southeast Asia appear to be at the heart of this competition, being among the most promising and fastest-growing markets in the world.
