After rounds of rumors and conflicting reports, NVIDIA has settled the debate by officially announcing its acquisition of the Hugging Face platform in a deal valued at approximately $12.93 billion. This move is considered one of the most prominent developments in the artificial intelligence sector this year, given the platform's standing as a major destination for the developer community worldwide.
What Does Hugging Face Represent in the AI World?
Founded in 2016, Hugging Face has evolved over the years into something resembling a central repository for open-source AI models. The platform currently hosts millions of technical assets that developers rely on to build their applications, most notably:
- More than three million AI models.
- Nearly one million applications used by over 18 million developers.
- Around half a million ready-to-use datasets.
According to funding data, the company has raised more than $395 million to date, with its most recent round in 2023 valued at $235 million and led by Salesforce Ventures, with participation from Google, Amazon, IBM, and NVIDIA itself.
Promises to Preserve the Open Nature
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang was keen to reassure the tech community in an official blog post, affirming that Hugging Face will remain an open platform serving the entire AI ecosystem. He clarified that developers will remain free to choose the models, frameworks, cloud services, and computing platforms they prefer.
Huang emphasized a central point: using NVIDIA processors will not be a mandatory requirement for building on the platform or deploying through it. He also noted that his company has already contributed more than 500 models and 250 open datasets to the platform, considering the building of open models to be aimed at expanding the base of developers benefiting from them globally.
The Strategic Dimensions of the Deal
For a company that holds a dominant position in the AI-dedicated hardware market, owning an open ecosystem represents significant strategic value. By controlling a platform of this size, NVIDIA can create a development environment compatible with its chips, and it can market its underutilized computing power to its enterprise customers as part of an integrated package with Hugging Face services.
It is worth noting that Hugging Face had rejected a $500 million offer from NVIDIA last year, according to press reports. As the platform's growth accelerated, recent reports indicated that its annual revenue reached approximately $150 million, while its officials hinted at approaching profitability.
The Position of Hugging Face's Founder
For his part, Clément Delangue, CEO of Hugging Face, expressed his gratitude to the community that proved the platform could be a genuine alternative to closed APIs. He explained that expanding on a larger scale requires more computing power, support, and collaboration, which he found available through the alliance with NVIDIA.
NVIDIA's Bet on Open Models
Huang is known for his supportive stance toward open-source models, and he previously signed a letter alongside other organizations calling for the strengthening of open-weight models to bolster the United States' position in the AI race against competitors such as China. The company is pumping massive investments into model development, including a $6 billion deal with a software startup, in addition to investments exceeding $50 billion in advanced AI labs.
Huang highlighted the importance of open models in the field of cybersecurity specifically, noting that most of these models run on NVIDIA hardware and that they have become essential for building autonomous cyber defense systems. This argument gains additional credibility after Delangue previously noted that an open model from NVIDIA helped the platform repel cyberattacks that closed models were unable to counter.
This deal reflects a growing trend toward integrating hardware, software, and developer ecosystems into major entities, and it raises important questions about the future of neutrality and openness in the most widely used AI platforms.
