«Microduck».. The Open-Source Duck Robot from Hugging Face for $399

In a move that reflects AI companies' shift toward bringing their technologies from screens into the physical world, Hugging Face has unveiled a small duck-shaped robot called «Microduck», priced at $399, with a promise to ship it before the end of the year. This announcement underscores the company's ambition to make smart robots available to developers and hobbyists alike at reasonable prices.

A Small Robot with Remarkable Capabilities

«Microduck» stands about 25 centimeters tall and is capable of performing a range of movements that mimic the behavior of a real duck. It can waddle while walking, pick up objects with its beak weighing up to 800 grams, and get back up after falling, in addition to bending and even skating. Clément Delangue, the company's CEO, describes the robot as «open-source that can be taught new tricks through reinforcement learning», considering its launch the beginning of «the era of open and affordable robots to bring physical AI to everyone».

How Does the Robot Perceive Its Surroundings?

«Microduck» relies on an integrated sensing system to perceive the world around it and interact with it. This system includes the following components:

• A camera for capturing images and visually recognizing the surrounding environment.
• Lidar sensors to measure distances and map the surroundings.
• Two inertial measurement units (IMU) that track the robot's movement and orientation.

Together, these components enable the robot to perform its tasks accurately and adapt to its surroundings while moving.

Training and Development in the Hands of Developers

One of the most distinctive features of «Microduck» is that its behaviors can be trained within a virtual simulation environment and then deployed directly onto the actual robot. Developers can then improve the robot's performance, retrain it, and redeploy it again, within a flexible development loop. «Pollen Robotics», the developer of the project, has made the software development kit (SDK), simulation tools, and the complete reinforcement learning training system available on «GitHub» so they are accessible to everyone.

From a Models Platform to a Hardware Maker

«Hugging Face» became known as a platform and community where developers go to obtain open-source model weights. However, the company expanded into hardware after acquiring the French startup «Pollen Robotics» in April 2025, with the aim of building open and affordable AI devices. This collaboration resulted in the «Reachy Mini» series, small desktop robots sold for $499 and $399 depending on the version and the computer that runs them.

Privacy Between Promises and Concerns

The presence of a camera-equipped robot inside bedrooms and private spaces raises legitimate concerns among users. Delangue believes that robots running on open-source models are better in terms of privacy compared to closed systems controlled by a few entities. However, the fact that a model is open-source does not necessarily guarantee that sensitive data will remain confidential, as applications that users install on top of the model can access the robot's cameras and microphones, and possibly send that data to external services depending on how they are programmed.

A Broader Context

The launch of «Microduck» comes at a time when reports indicate that «Nvidia» is close to acquiring «Hugging Face» for nearly $13 billion. The two companies have had a partnership extending over several years, with «Nvidia» providing infrastructure to the startup since at least 2023, in addition to their declared alignment in supporting open-source AI. This trajectory reflects how integrating open software with affordable hardware has become a pivotal step in the race to bring AI from the digital world into tangible reality.
