As the race to develop large language models intensifies, high-quality AI training data has become a precious commodity fiercely contested by major research labs and tech companies. This immense demand has created an exceptional opportunity for a group of startups specializing in data preparation and labeling, foremost among them Micro1, which is witnessing remarkable revenue growth.

A Revenue Leap in a Matter of Months

According to a source familiar with the company, the four-year-old Micro1 managed to raise its annualized gross revenue rate from $100 million to $500 million in just eight months. Like its competitors that rely on specialized experts such as doctors, lawyers, and scientists on a contract basis, the company retains roughly 60% to 70% of this figure, placing its net annual revenue between $150 and $200 million.

Despite this growth, the company still lags behind larger competitors such as Mercor, whose annualized gross revenue reached $2 billion this summer, and Handshake, which hit $1 billion at the start of the year. However, this progress reflects a fundamental truth: the market is large enough to accommodate multiple players in the training data supply space.

Data May Rival Computing in Spending

Some researchers expect future spending on AI training data to match spending on computing power, which bodes well for companies like Micro1. The company is seeing rapid expansion in the size of its contracts and expects steady improvement in its profit margins over time.

Micro1 is increasingly turning to generating synthetic data without human intervention, such as creating automated descriptions of video content. Some of the data it produces can also be sold to more than one customer, raising the profit margin for this type of "ready-made" data to between 80% and 90%, according to a source familiar with its financial situation.

Controversy Over Selling the Same Data to Multiple Parties

The practice of selling the same datasets to multiple customers has sparked controversy recently, as critics argue that distributing ready-made data to AI developers in China helps bring their models up to the level of leading American models.

In response, company founder Ali Ansari asserted in a statement on the X platform that his company — unlike some of its competitors — does not sell its data to model makers in China. He said that invoking the desire for American dominance in AI while selling data worth millions of dollars to rival nations is disgraceful.

From Hiring to Data Labeling

Micro1, like its competitor Mercor, started as a startup specializing in AI-based hiring. But when Ansari noticed that data-labeling clients were using his platform to vet and hire engineers for labeling work, he decided to pivot his company's activity toward the field of data preparation itself.

Today the company is heading toward more ambitious projects, including:

  • Evaluating model outputs through specialized experts, within what are known as "reinforcement learning arenas."
  • Building a pre-training dataset for robots by recording hundreds of people's daily interactions with objects in their homes.
  • Generating automated synthetic data to reduce reliance on the human element.

Growing Funding and High Valuation

Micro1 raised a Series A funding round at a $500 million valuation last September, and available information suggests it may have recently completed a new round at a much higher valuation. This investor interest reflects the market's confidence in the growth of the training data sector, which has become a fundamental pillar in developing the next generation of AI models.
