Meta Launches Pocket App for AI Game Development in the US
By Admin
Meta continues to expand its bet on AI-powered creative tools, announcing the availability of its Pocket beta app to all users in the United States. This expansion comes after the app was quietly launched last month in the Brazilian test market, offering users a new way to create small, interactive games without needing technical expertise or complex programming skills.
What is the Pocket App?
Pocket relies on a concept known as "vibe-coding," an approach that allows users to generate small games by writing simple text prompts for the AI. Once created, these games are published in a browsable feed similar to social media platform interfaces, making discovering and sharing them easy and fast.
The roots of this technology trace back to Meta's acquisition of the team behind the Gizmo gaming platform earlier this year, in what is known as an "acqui-hire" deal. For this reason, the games created within the app are called "gizmos."
Advanced Interactive Capabilities
The games produced by the app are distinguished by their ability to interact with users in multiple ways, and among their most notable features:
- Responding to screen touch and phone tilt movements.
- Playing sound effects and integrating clips from favorite songs.
- Using images stored in the phone's gallery or accessing the camera directly.
After creating a game, it can be shared on the user's profile, where others can save it, repost it, or even "remix" it to produce new games inspired by it, giving the app a social, collaborative character.
Part of a Broader Meta Strategy
Pocket is the latest link in a series of Meta's efforts to make AI creative tools accessible to the general public. The company previously enabled image generation through the Meta AI app, in addition to creating AI-generated videos through a beta app called Vibes.
The new app joins a growing list of standalone apps the company has launched in recent months, including Instagram Instants, the Forum app for groups, the Seller app for Facebook Marketplace, alongside an experiment involving AI-generated bedtime stories, and finally the Meta AI app for Mac devices.
AI Accelerates the Pace of Development
Mark Zuckerberg, the company's CEO, believes this large surge in app launches is due to the growing reliance on AI in software development, which shortens the time needed to test new ideas and bring them to market.
Zuckerberg explained during the company's earnings call in July that the company launched several standalone apps this year, anticipating that launching new apps will become much easier in the future. He noted that Meta plans to build more ideas and leverage its recommendation systems to scale them.
Conclusion
The launch of Pocket reflects Meta's vision of transforming AI from a specialized tool into a mass creative platform, enabling anyone to easily create interactive content. With the accelerating pace of app launches, the company appears to be betting on integrating entertainment, creativity, and social networking into a single AI-based experience.
