Meta Enables AI Agents to Automatically Set Up WhatsApp Business Accounts

In a move aimed at simplifying the experience for developers and business owners, Meta has announced a new feature that enables AI agents to handle the tedious, repetitive tasks associated with setting up the "WhatsApp Business" service. This service allows companies to communicate directly with their customers through WhatsApp conversations, but setting it up had until now been a complex process requiring navigation across multiple tools. Today, however, it is enough for a developer to simply describe what they want to accomplish to the AI agent, which then takes care of the rest.

What Made Setup So Cumbersome?

According to Meta, developers previously had to move between various interfaces and services to complete the setup process, including:

• The Developer Console.
• Meta's Business Manager.
• The API Reference.
• Their own code editing environment.

This fragmentation across tools consumed considerable time and effort, especially for small teams and startups seeking to launch their services quickly.

How Does the New Solution Work?

The solution relies on a new tool called WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a server based on the Model Context Protocol that directly connects the software AI agent with the WhatsApp Business platform. Thanks to this integration, well-known agents such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT can be used to interact with the platform through natural conversation instead of complex manual navigation.

Tasks Handled by the AI Agent

Once given instructions, the AI agent takes on most of the routine work associated with setting up WhatsApp Business, most notably:

• Creating the company's WhatsApp Business account.
• Adding and verifying the phone number.
• Registering the account for access to the Cloud API.
• Reviewing the platform's terms of service.

The matter does not stop at the initial setup, as companies can enlist the AI agent for other tasks, such as describing a message template they wish to create so the agent can build it, or modifying an existing template. The system also allows testing messages and webhooks, and monitoring elements that previously failed silently, such as terms of service, payment method, and business identity verification.

An Additional Server for Troubleshooting

Meta noted that during the setup process, another server called Meta Social Technologies MCP can be used, which helps discover API endpoints, search technical documentation, and address errors that may arise during work.

A Broader Industry Trend Toward the MCP Protocol

This step represents an expansion of the suite of MCP servers offered by Meta, which was previously limited to managing ads, monitoring app settings, and some social technologies, and now includes a dedicated server to facilitate companies' onboarding to WhatsApp.

It is worth noting that Meta is not alone on this path, as many major tech companies now offer MCP servers that enable AI agents to interact securely with their services, including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, and Atlassian, in addition to Google, Microsoft, and others.
