Departure of OpenAI's Data Centers Chief Deepens Wave of Executive Resignations

OpenAI is facing a mounting wave of executive departures, the latest being the exit of the official responsible for its data center strategy—at a timing that raises questions given the growing importance of this role in a world where everyone is racing to build artificial intelligence infrastructure. This departure is not an isolated incident, but a new link in a chain of resignations that has drawn attention and stirred doubts about the company's stability, especially with its highly anticipated public offering approaching.

Departure of a Key Official at a Critical Time

According to press reports, Chris Malone, who led OpenAI's data centers division, recently left the company after a relatively short period of no more than about a year and a half. Malone had joined the company in March of last year, bringing extensive experience gained over nearly five years at Meta and more than a decade at Google before that.

His departure carries special significance because it came shortly after the launch of the ambitious "Stargate" project, a massive initiative to build data centers within the United States. OpenAI is a pivotal partner in this project alongside major companies such as Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank, and Microsoft.

Restructuring or a Deeper Signal?

The real reasons behind Malone's departure have not been made definitively clear. However, the company attributed the matter to a recent restructuring of its infrastructure division aimed at keeping pace with the accelerating scale and speed of its work, affirming that it has a strong team with deep expertise in the data centers field, along with clear leadership and sufficient technical competence to execute its plans.

As part of this restructuring, Malone stopped reporting directly to company President Greg Brockman and began working under the supervision of Vice President Sachin Katti, who took over leadership of the group. Data center strategy is currently overseen by a number of executives, including Uday Rudragou, who is responsible for the team; Brent Mayo, who leads the build and delivery program; and Sebas Lazarov, a veteran in the data centers and energy sectors.

A Widening Departure Streak

Malone does not stand alone on this list, as his departure joins more than ten executive resignations the company has seen over the year, according to various reports. Notably, most of those leaving hold the most senior positions rather than lower-level roles. Among the most prominent of these resignations are:

• Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser, who left after only about eight months of joining.
• Brad Lightcap, one of the company's most senior executives, who served as chief operating officer for years and announced he was about to "start a new venture" without details.
• Fidji Simo, who was effectively considered the company's second-in-command as head of product and business, who stepped aside to recover from a "chronic illness" while remaining in an advisory role.
• Chloe Bakalar, the ethics officer, who left in July.
• Bill Peebles, the former head of the "Sora" image-generation tool, which was discontinued.
• Kate Rouch, the marketing director who left for health reasons in April.

The safety and ethics teams have also seen notable shifts, as it was recently reported that the company dismantled its "Preparedness" team dedicated to assessing whether its models might lead to catastrophic risks.

What Does This Mean for the Company's Future?

OpenAI's remaining leadership has tried to downplay this wave, with co-founder Greg Brockman noting that the intense spotlight on the company subjects every departure to scrutiny that other companies do not face. However, this ongoing turnover has raised legitimate questions, especially as the company prepares for its public offering, which had been expected this year before being postponed to 2027.

This phase coincides with scrutiny of the company's reputation, amid concerns that its valuation may be exaggerated and that its profits do not match the enormous investments being pumped into it. Ultimately, the flow of departing executives has not calmed these doubts, but rather intensified them.
