Cursor Launches «Origin» Platform to Rival GitHub Amid Its Service Disruptions

For many years, «GitHub» has remained the first and most popular choice among developers worldwide for hosting source code and collaborating on projects. However, the series of recurring outages and declining performance that have recently plagued the platform have opened the door for ambitious competitors to seize the opportunity—chief among them «Cursor», a company specializing in AI-powered programming tools.

What is the New «Origin» Platform?

Cursor—which has officially become part of the «SpaceX» group—announced the launch of a new platform called «Origin», designed to perform the same tasks developers rely on GitHub for. The platform enables collaborative work on codebases, browsing and editing them, and managing Pull Requests proposed by contributors to add their modifications to the main project, along with storing projects in dedicated repositories.

This move appears to be a natural extension of the company's trajectory, which has so far focused on selling automated web development services through its intelligent code editor. Cursor indicated that «Agent Native» features will soon be available on Origin, without yet revealing many details. The company is also working on building a broader «app ecosystem» to support diverse programming projects within the platform.

Integration Instead of Replacement

Notably, using Origin does not require developers to abandon GitHub. The platform is designed to work alongside GitHub, enabling seamless code exchange between the two with interoperability.

The company explained the linking mechanism simply in its blog as follows:

• Your GitHub repositories can remain alongside the repositories hosted by Cursor.
• You link your GitHub account to Cursor and select your organization.
• The syncable repositories appear, and you choose which ones you want Cursor to pull automatically.

Perfect Timing Amid GitHub's Struggles

Origin's launch coincided with growing developer frustration over the decline in GitHub's services. On the very same day Cursor launched its new platform, GitHub experienced a widespread global outage that lasted more than six hours, during which its functionality degraded with an error rate reaching about 20% worldwide.

This was not the first time; earlier this year, GitHub announced new measures to appease angry developers following a wave of outages. According to a recent analysis, the platform suffered 257 outages over the past year, prompting some prominent users to gradually distance themselves from it.

A Difficult Challenge for Cursor

Nevertheless, competing with GitHub will not be easy. According to the platform's own figures, around 180 million developers were using it as of last October. GitHub, which was founded in 2007 and later acquired by Microsoft, is the world's largest platform for hosting source code.

Success remains contingent on Cursor's ability to deliver real value beyond merely exploiting its competitor's outages, especially with the AI features it promises. If the company can achieve performance stability and seamless integration, it may find a foothold in a market GitHub has dominated for more than a decade.
