DROPIDEA | دروب ايديا - Crusoe Raises $3.9 Billion to Build Portable 'AI Factories'

In a move that reflects the scale of the intensifying race for AI infrastructure, Crusoe, a company specializing in data center development, has announced that it raised $3.9 billion in a new funding round, bringing its market valuation up to $30.9 billion. This massive round places the company, which is only eight years old, among the most prominent players in the field of computing infrastructure needed to run AI models.

A Funding Round Led by Major Investors

The Series F funding round was led by a number of major investment funds, including Atreides Management, Mubadala Capital, and Valor Equity Partners. Other prominent names also participated in the funding, such as Founders Fund, Singapore's GIC, Nvidia, the Qatar Investment Authority, Radical Ventures, and TPG.

This round comes just about ten months after a previous round in which the company raised $1.38 billion at a valuation of $10 billion, meaning its value has nearly tripled in less than a year.

Strengthening the Board of Directors

Alongside the funding, Crusoe announced the addition of three new members to its board of directors, namely:

  • Thomas Seifert, Chief Financial Officer of Cloudflare.
  • Bill Stein, Partner and Chief Investment Officer at Primary Digital Infrastructure.
  • JB Straubel, founder and CEO of Redwood Materials and a Tesla board member.

Straubel has a prior relationship with Crusoe, having invested in it personally in 2021, after which the company later became the first customer for Redwood's energy storage business.

AI Factories That Can Be Transported by Truck

Crusoe will direct the new funds toward financing its existing projects, most notably a massive site in the city of Abilene, Texas, which is used by OpenAI. The company also plans to expand into an innovative type of small modular data center called "Spark."

These units can be manufactured within Crusoe's facilities and then transported by truck and connected to large power sources almost anywhere. This approach delivers several advantages:

  • Deploying computing capacity more quickly without the need for a large construction workforce.
  • Overcoming part of the obstacles associated with local communities' opposition to building giant complexes near their residential neighborhoods.

A Three-Dimensional Business Model

Crusoe relies on three main paths to generate its revenue:

  • Leasing data center space to customers who bring their own GPUs.
  • Leasing the company's own GPUs.
  • Selling the computing power needed to run AI models, known as inference.

This diversity has helped the company become one of the most valuable AI infrastructure companies. According to reports, Crusoe recently signed a massive cloud contract worth $13 billion over five years to supply the quantitative trading firm Jane Street with GPUs and AI infrastructure.

From Crypto Mining to Artificial Intelligence

Crusoe was founded in 2018, when it began its operations as a cryptocurrency mining operation powered by flared natural gas. However, it soon shifted its course toward AI infrastructure as demand for computing power surged. Its customer list today includes major companies such as Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle.

Chase Lochmiller, co-founder and CEO of Crusoe, expressed his conviction that AI will lead to an era of abundance, emphasizing that reaching this requires "controlling the infrastructure entirely, from electrons to tokens." Reports indicate that the company has held meetings with investment banks, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, to discuss the possibility of a public offering in the near future.
