Bentley EXP 15: A Luxury Electric Vehicle with an Artificial V8 Engine Sound

The luxury automaker is heading toward a new era as it enters the electric world with confidence. British marque Bentley is preparing to officially unveil its first fully electric vehicle, the «2027 EXP 15». This sport utility vehicle enters to compete in the luxury electric vehicle segment, which is now crowded with prominent names such as the Rolls-Royce Spectre, Cadillac Celestiq, and Mercedes-Maybach EQS.

A Shared Platform and a Design Balancing Authenticity and Modernity

The EXP 15 shares its technical platform with the electric version of the Porsche Cayenne, both of which belong to the Volkswagen Group. During an initial test aboard a fully camouflaged prototype, the features of a spacious and comfortable vehicle emerged, carrying Bentley's distinctive signature despite being smaller than the current Bentayga model.

It is worth noting that the camouflage covered both the interior and exterior; the cabin was covered with thick black fabric, and fake body panels were fixed to the exterior to conceal the vehicle's final shape. Martin Page, production line manager for the EXP 15, explained that the features visible at this stage do not reflect the final production design.

Exceptional Ride Comfort and Precise Steering

The engineers focused on achieving the highest levels of insulation and smooth driving. Instead of relying solely on the two-chamber air suspension system used in the brand's other models, the team precisely adjusted the oil flow within the adaptive dampers, making the difference between «Comfort» and «Sport» modes more pronounced and distinctive. The engineers paid great attention to fine-tuning the wheel angles and steering system so that it returns to the center position and maintains it steadily.

An Artificial V8 Engine Sound with a Craftsman's Touch

One of the most notable features of the EXP 15 is its simulation of an eight-cylinder engine sound, inspired by the famous «Turbo R» model from the 1980s. What is striking, however, is that this sound was not produced automatically via an electronic synthesizer, but rather recorded by a drummer and then mixed to include slight imperfections that mimic the character of traditional engines.

Page emphasized that the goal is to preserve craftsmanship not only in materials, but also in the execution of digital aspects. This sound has an additional practical benefit, as it gives passengers auditory cues linked to the vehicle's torque, which helps reduce motion sickness. This sound has not been finalized yet, as it is still undergoing fine-tuning.

Sustainability at the Core of the Design

Bentley places clear emphasis on environmental impact, and has set explicit goals for using recyclable materials and green aluminum. Among the most prominent features of this approach are:

• Door panels made from fully recyclable natural fibers instead of injection-molded plastic.
• An interior upholstery option of Merino wool in collaboration with British company Fox Brothers, a renewable and durable material that withstands daily use.
• The assembly plant in Crewe, England, adheres to strict green energy requirements, foremost among them solar power.

As for digital touches, the instrument cluster and infotainment display show a background image of a hand-carved crystal decanter made by Cumbria Crystal, highlighting natural light reflections through each cut, in another embodiment of the philosophy of craftsmanship in the digital age.

Performance and Charging Specifications

The final specifications for power, battery, and charging have not yet been finalized, but initial indicators reveal a powerful vehicle:

• Power exceeding 800 horsepower and torque surpassing 700 lb-ft.
• A total weight of approximately 2,700 kilograms.
• A targeted driving range exceeding 595 kilometers.
• A maximum charging rate of 400 kilowatts, with an ambition to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in less than 20 minutes, and add 160 kilometers in just about seven minutes.

It is expected to rely on a battery unit similar to that used in Porsche, with a net capacity of 108 kWh. Thus, Bentley seeks to deliver an authentic and integrated experience that combines the brand's rich heritage with the requirements of a sustainable electric mobility future.
