The mobile gaming landscape is undergoing a major shift with the arrival of new British technology that could redefine how games are designed and run on small devices. Arm has launched the Mali G2-Ultra NX graphics processor, featuring an AI-powered gaming accelerator, beginning its journey in the Chinese market via the foldable Xiaomi 18 Fold phone, which is equipped with the custom Xring O3 chip.

This achievement comes after five years of development, and aims to bring graphics technologies that were once exclusive to desktop computers to the palm of your hand, allowing games to run faster, with higher resolution and more realistic lighting, without consuming additional power.

Emulating Nvidia's Approach on Phones

With this processor, Arm follows in the footsteps of Nvidia, famous for its DLSS technology, offering a suite of AI-powered tools it has named "Neural Graphics." These tools include:

  • Neural Super Sampling: The system imagines a higher-resolution image starting from a lower-resolution one.
  • Frame Generation: Creating new frames between the original frames to increase motion smoothness.
  • Neural Denoising: Improving image quality with advanced lighting techniques.

However, Arm's concept of neural graphics differs from Nvidia's; the focus here is on speed and performance rather than fully reimagining facial details or light and shadow reflections, at least for now.

A Major Leap in Performance

Arm claims the new processor achieves a performance increase of up to 85% compared to the previous processor Xiaomi used, and 14% compared to its previous flagship processor in traditional gaming. When all AI technologies are enabled together, the increase in frame rate can reach fourfold.

However, it's important to note that games won't practically appear four times faster, as half of this improvement relies on generating "fake" frames, a process that is often accompanied by a slight increase in latency, as is the case with Nvidia, AMD, and Intel technologies.

Power Efficiency

Chris Bergey, Senior Vice President of Arm's edge AI division, notes that a phone equipped with this chip will not consume more than 2.5 watts, of which only 1.5 watts is for the graphics processor. He emphasizes that this level is ideal for continuous gaming without the device overheating or its battery draining quickly.

Bergey gives an example, stating that a player will be able to play at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second for three hours, whereas previously the duration was only half an hour. As for the larger Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max tablet, the company demonstrated performance at 3.2K resolution and 120 frames per second.

Not Exclusive to Chinese Phones

Despite its launch in the Chinese market, Arm confirms that this technology will reach a wider range of devices next year, including phones, tablets, and Chromebooks. Bergey also hinted at the possibility of it being used in some upcoming "Googlebooks" from Google.

The technology will not be limited to flagship phones only, but will be available in the Premium and Pro tiers, reaching wider segments of the market.

Supported Games and Timeline

Not all of these technologies will arrive at once; the first games will begin with Neural Super Sampling, with frame generation arriving in early 2027, followed shortly by denoising. These features require integration by game developers, though popular engines such as Unreal Engine and Unity will facilitate the process.

So far, three initial games supporting the new processor have been announced: Where Winds Meet, Infinity Nikki, and Arena Breakout: Infinite, with promises to reveal additional titles in the coming weeks.

This step represents a shift in the philosophy of mobile graphics, where AI replaces traditional rendering wherever possible, delivering a gaming experience closer to that of a PC on a device that fits in your pocket.
