Apple Earbuds with a Camera: Are 'AirPods' Turning Into a Spying Tool?

A recent leak about Apple's intention to launch 'AirPods' equipped with cameras has sparked a wave of questions and concerns among users. With growing public anxiety over wearable devices fitted with cameras, such as Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, this move seemed to contradict Apple's image, which has long presented itself as a company that places user privacy at the top of its priorities. But a deeper look into the details of the leak reveals that these earbuds may not be as dangerous as some might think at first glance.

Where Did the Leak Come From?

Indications of the cameras' existence appeared through a video clip found within the final beta version of the 'macOS 26.7' system. The clip shows a man wearing the earbuds and holding a book while talking to the 'Siri' voice assistant about it. The video is accompanied by a voice-over that says something to the effect of: 'Thanks to visual intelligence, everything around you becomes savable. Like something? Ask me to save it for later.'

This leak was reinforced by a piece of code referring to an error message called 'Hair Detected,' which alerts the user when their hair blocks the camera lens in the earbuds, confirming the presence of an actual imaging component inside the device.

Not an Imaging Tool but 'Eyes' for Siri

According to earlier reports cited by journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, these cameras will not be capable of recording photos or videos at all. Rather, they are designed to act as 'eyes' for the smart assistant 'Siri,' capturing visual information only in low resolution. These components are present in both the right and left earbuds.

In other words, Apple does not aim to turn one of its best-selling accessories into a surveillance tool, but rather to give users a more natural way to interact with the enhanced, AI-powered version of 'Siri,' which is expected to launch with the system updates in the coming September.

Diverse Practical Uses

A person wearing the earbuds can look at something and ask 'Siri' for help directly. Possible examples of this functionality include:

• Recognizing a particular book or product and saving its details for later.
• Identifying food ingredients while cooking and getting instant suggestions.
• Getting step-by-step navigation directions when walking through an unfamiliar city.

A Strategic Bet on a Screen-Free Future

Apple appears to be betting on something bigger than merely adding a new feature. By integrating access to artificial intelligence into a device worn daily and widely accepted socially, the company seeks to reduce users' need to take out their phones frequently. This could pave the way, if not for a completely screen-free future, then for a future that allows interaction with the surrounding world in a smoother way than constantly staring at a lit screen.

The Dilemma of Trust and Public Image

Despite all this, this move remains a bigger gamble than the usual updates to Apple devices, because its brand is built on trust. 'AirPods' are worn today without any second thought, whereas this change might lead people to wonder whether the person in front of them is secretly recording them.

The dilemma grows more complicated with Gurman's report that the new earbuds will include an LED indicator that lights up when visual data is being shared with cloud computing. Although this measure is correct from the standpoint of transparency and privacy protection, it may visually classify Apple's earbuds within the category of wearable devices that face public skepticism, such as Meta's smart glasses and Google's new glasses. In short, Apple may control what the cameras actually do, but it has far less control over what people assume they do.
