A Quiet Competitor Knocks on the Leader's Door

In a notable move, Agility Robotics has announced the opening of a 60,000-square-foot training facility in Fremont, California — the very city where Tesla is preparing to begin large-scale production of its humanoid robot, Optimus, later this year. The geographic choice is no coincidence; it sends a clear message that Agility is ready to compete in the hottest arena in humanoid robotics.

Digit: A Robot Already Working in the Real World

While most competing humanoid robots remain confined to development stages and marketing demonstrations, Agility's Digit robot is already operating inside real warehouses for customers including Amazon, GXO, Schaeffler, and Toyota Motor Canada. The robot moves boxes and bins within manufacturing and logistics environments, and has successfully transported more than 100,000 containers at a GXO facility alone. The company reports that it has secured contracts worth over $300 million for the robot's deployment.

Commercial Leadership as Leverage Against Tesla

CEO Peggy Johnson acknowledges that Tesla's presence in the same region is a positive rather than a nuisance, as it helps broaden overall interest in humanoid robotics. However, she points to what sets Agility apart: "We've moved past the pilot phase and into actual commercial deployment. We now know how to enter these facilities, meet their safety and regulatory requirements, and integrate the robot into their tech systems and warehouse management platforms."

This reflects a fundamental competitive advantage: real-world operational experience cannot be shortcut or accelerated simply by injecting capital.

AI: A Tool for Scaling, Not for Risk-Taking

Agility takes a balanced approach to generative AI — it does not route safety systems through generative AI models, recognizing that uncalculated creativity in this domain carries serious risks. Co-founder Damion Shelton illustrates this philosophy with a straightforward analogy: "Just as you wouldn't want generative AI controlling the braking system in a self-driving car, safety decisions in robotics should not pass through a generative pipeline."

Generative AI is instead leveraged to expand the robot's capabilities and rapidly teach it new tasks — something that was previously a genuine challenge, since the number of tasks one can imagine a robot performing far exceeds the number of engineers capable of programming them manually.

A New Chapter: Going Public and the Fifth-Generation Model

Agility is currently undergoing a dual institutional transformation:

• It is pursuing a public market listing through a reverse merger, which would make it the first pure-play humanoid robotics company to be publicly traded.
• It is preparing to unveil Digit Version 5 this coming fall — a model equipped with sensors that enable it to operate in mixed environments alongside humans, rather than being limited to robot-only zones.

Target Market: Warehouses, Not Homes

Unlike some companies that dream of bringing robots into households, Agility remains committed to the industrial and logistics sector, where real value lies today. Co-founder Jonathan Hurst believes this sector alone is enough to keep the company busy for years — from moving containers and picking-and-packing operations to loading and unloading heavy freight trucks — tasks that could ultimately require deploying millions of robots worldwide.

Founded in 2015 by researchers specializing in bipedal locomotion, the company believes that technical excellence backed by genuine field experience is the surest path to maintaining leadership in a market where startups are racing forward at an ever-accelerating pace.
