When Personality Becomes a Technical Asset

In a world where AI models are advancing rapidly and converging in capability, the next competitive battle appears set to be fought on an entirely different front: how AI talks to users. That is the bet placed by Cognition — known for its coding assistant Devin — when it announced the acquisition of The Interaction Company of California, developer of the conversational assistant Poke, in a deal valued in the low nine figures.

What Makes Poke Different?

Poke launched in March 2026 as an assistant that communicates with users through everyday messaging platforms such as iMessage, SMS, Telegram, and WhatsApp in select markets. But what sets it apart is not the channel — it is the style. Poke engages users with a warm, familiar tone, weaving in humor and spontaneity rather than delivering the rigid responses common to conventional AI tools.

People use Poke for a wide range of tasks, including:

Managing email, reminders, and to-do lists
Travel planning and schedule organization
Financial, health, and educational inquiries

In the past three months alone, the platform has facilitated more than 100 million messages exchanged by hundreds of thousands of active users.

Why Does Devin Need a Personality?

Marvin von Hagen, co-founder of The Interaction Company, explains the logic behind the deal with a straightforward human analogy: "You often prefer working with colleagues who have personality rather than with rigid machines. When your colleague is a software engineer who can crack a joke at just the right moment, it makes the experience both enjoyable and productive at the same time."

That is precisely what Cognition aims to achieve with Devin. Rather than having the coding agent feel like a program simply executing commands, the company wants users to feel as though they are collaborating with a genuine colleague — one who understands context, remembers details, and proactively offers suggestions. Cognition co-founder Scott Wu confirmed that the Interaction team built an agent people love because it is proactive, friendly, and enjoyable to work with — and that is exactly what he wanted for the Devin experience.

Integration Plan: Gradual Transition, Not Immediate Merger

No immediate changes will be made to Poke through the end of the current year. The assistant will continue operating independently and will retain its place on Apple Messages for Business — a platform on which it became the first AI agent to be certified, back in June.

Next year, a phase of joint experimentation and development will begin along two parallel tracks:

Enhancing Poke: Leveraging Cognition's SWE-1.7 model to handle more complex coding tasks, making it faster and more reliable.
Humanizing Devin: Incorporating the human interaction model developed by the Poke team to make the Devin experience warmer and more fluid.

Von Hagen envisions the fuller long-term picture as one in which Poke orchestrates multiple simultaneous Devin sessions — something Devin currently cannot do, as it is limited to one request at a time — while Poke maintains user memory across those sessions to deliver a continuous and cohesive experience.

A Lesson for the Entire Industry

This deal reveals a strategic trend deepening across the AI sector: more powerful models are necessary, but they are no longer sufficient. The companies that will earn lasting user loyalty are those that master the art of interaction and give their products a personality that makes engaging with them a genuinely enjoyable experience — not merely a utilitarian tool. As competition in the AI agent market intensifies, personality may prove to be one of the deepest and hardest-to-replicate competitive moats of all.
