When Luxury Becomes an AI Gamble

British luxury brand Vertu isn't fighting the same battle as the major smartphone players. While Samsung, Apple, and others race to convince everyday consumers of AI's benefits, Vertu targets an entirely different audience: executives seeking a device that reflects their status while boosting their productivity at the same time.

Its new foldable, the Alphafold, starts at $6,880 and is positioned not merely as a smartphone, but as a fully integrated digital executive assistant. Yet real-world experience reveals a picture far more nuanced than the company's marketing suggests.

An AI Agent at the Core

The Alphafold is built around what Vertu calls the "Hermes Agent" — an AI agent based on an open-source project, baked directly into the device. Unlike traditional voice assistants that simply answer questions, Hermes is designed to execute complete task chains: analyzing files and contracts, scheduling appointments, automating workflows across multiple apps, and escalating to a human concierge when needed.

This makes Hermes the centerpiece of the company's marketing proposition — not the phone's hardware specs.

A Design That Feels Like a Jewelry Box, Not a Phone Box

The device arrives in packaging that closely resembles a luxury jewelry case, with organized compartments holding included accessories such as a leather cover and charging cables. The phone itself is wrapped in genuine calfskin leather with titanium accents, setting it visually apart from mainstream foldables made of glass and synthetic materials.

The device weighs 264 grams — noticeably heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 at 215 grams — though the weight remains manageable in daily use. The curved frame makes opening the display easier compared to Samsung's flatter edges, but Samsung's design is more comfortable to hold one-handed when folded.

Beyond the Leather and Titanium

A closer look at the device's construction reveals striking similarities to the ZTE Nubia Fold, which retails for around $1,100 — including the hinge design, dimensions, and component placement such as speakers, microphones, and the fingerprint reader. System information also exposed ZTE-linked identifiers within the software.

When confronted with this, Vertu acknowledged a supply chain partnership with ZTE/Nubia covering the hardware platform and manufacturing, while maintaining that it independently handles premium material selection, software experience development, quality control, and after-sales services. This isn't new territory for Vertu; Wired identified a similar pattern with the MetaVertu phone back in 2023.

The Real Test: A Full Working Day

To evaluate the Alphafold on its own terms, it was put through real executive scenarios over several days rather than relying on conventional benchmarks. Tests included:

• Analyzing spreadsheets and contracts
• Planning business trips and managing appointments
• Automating multi-step tasks across different applications
• Comparing results against the Galaxy Z Fold 7 running Google's Gemini assistant

Hermes demonstrated a clear edge in analyzing local files and spreadsheets — an area where Gemini still requires manual document uploads. It also showed greater willingness to execute action sequences without constant prompting from the user.

Impressive Autonomy, But Incomplete

In one test, the agent was asked to handle four simultaneous tasks before heading to the airport: send a contact a message about running late, open navigation, activate Do Not Disturb, and set a reminder for 15 minutes' time. Hermes completed three of the four tasks, but failed to launch navigation automatically and set the reminder several hours off from the actual request time.

This experience captures the core dilemma: the agent's growing autonomy is impressive in principle, but raises a fundamental question about when AI should act independently and when it should seek clarification before proceeding.

Bottom Line: Is the Price Justified?

The Alphafold delivers a genuinely premium experience in design, packaging, and materials, and carries an AI agent that surpasses many competitors in workflow automation. But the gap between its staggering price tag and what is, in part, borrowed technology remains wide. The executive seeking a status symbol will find exactly what they're looking for; those seeking maximum value for every dollar spent will find far more compelling options on the market.
