In a move that signals sweeping ambition in the AI infrastructure market, British cloud computing company Nscale has announced its acquisition of American startup Anyscale for an estimated $1.65 billion. The deal comes amid intensifying global competition to capture as much of the AI value chain as possible — from energy and data centers all the way to the software layers that run and scale AI models.

Who Is Anyscale?

Anyscale was founded by the same team behind the open-source framework Ray, a Python-based distributed computing framework used to distribute compute-intensive workloads across servers and data centers. The company initially focused on providing a platform for running large-scale compute projects, but the launch of GPT-3 in 2022 prompted it to pivot toward the demands of generative AI.

Today, Anyscale offers a comprehensive suite of solutions, including:

• Training and serving large language models
• Automated inference and model lifecycle management
• Reinforcement learning and complex workload orchestration
• Data pipelines and performance monitoring through specialized developer tools

The company has achieved impressive revenue growth, rising 70% in the most recent quarter compared to the prior quarter — reflecting surging demand for AI scaling services.

Why Is This Deal Compelling for Nscale?

Nscale has adopted vertical integration as a core pillar of its business model. Rather than simply renting out servers and compute resources, it aims to own every layer of the technology stack its customers depend on. The company had already built business units spanning energy, data centers, and orchestration software. With the addition of Anyscale, Nscale gains a specialized layer for managing and scaling AI workloads, enabling it to offer customers a fully integrated package — from infrastructure all the way up to the application layer.

In this context, Anyscale noted that integrating with Nscale will allow both companies to co-design their software and underlying infrastructure in a cohesive manner — something neither could easily achieve independently.

Nscale: Rapid Growth and Major Partnerships

Nscale remains in an intensive expansion phase. In March 2025, it closed a $2 billion Series C funding round that valued the company at $14.6 billion. Its investor roster includes prominent names such as Nvidia, Nokia, Dell, and Blue Owl, as well as Norwegian industrial giant the Aker Group.

The company has deployed this capital to forge strategic partnerships with the likes of Microsoft, British Telecom, and Nordcraft, as it works to cement its position in the cloud computing market dedicated to AI.

Nscale confirmed that Anyscale will retain its independent brand and continue serving its existing customers without interruption, with approximately 200 Anyscale employees formally joining Nscale. This approach suggests the acquisition is aimed at enhancing technical capabilities rather than pursuing a rapid institutional merger.
