Attie from Bluesky: The AI Assistant Transforms into a Social Research Tool
By Admin
An AI Assistant That Goes Beyond Algorithms
Bluesky has long positioned itself as a decentralized, open alternative to traditional social networks, and it is now reinforcing that vision with a notable upgrade to its AI assistant Attie. Launched last March as a tool for designing custom algorithms and building content feeds without writing a single line of code, Attie is now taking a much broader step toward comprehensive social research.
Quests: A Gateway to Open Exploration
Bluesky has announced a new feature added to Attie called Quests, which enables users to ask open-ended questions about what is happening across the extended social network known as the "Atmosphere." This goes beyond Bluesky itself, extending to every application built on the open AT Protocol that the company leads.
This feature allows users to, for example:
- Track trending topics and analyze how they spread across the network.
- Identify the most influential accounts in a specific field or geographic location.
- Extract detailed information about any event or discussion taking place in the open social space.
In other words, Attie is evolving from a simple feed designer into a social intelligence engine, giving everyday users analytical capabilities that were once reserved for specialists.
Leadership Vision: Fighting Noise, Not Adding to It
Jay Graber, Bluesky's Chief Innovation Officer and former CEO, described this development as a reflection of the platform's core philosophy: "Attie helps you understand the internet and gives you the tools to find truth for yourself, rather than making the landscape more complicated and misleading." Graber added that Bluesky's bet is that tools helping people understand the world will prove their value over the long term.
It is worth noting that Graber announced her departure from the CEO role in March, with Toni Schneider, the former founder of Automattic, succeeding her in that position.
Context: Slowing Growth and the Need for Diversification
This development cannot be separated from the broader context Bluesky is navigating. After doubling its user base to reach 40 million accounts last October, growth has slowed considerably, with the platform now sitting at approximately 45.6 million registered accounts. This reality is pushing the company to seek services and tools capable of attracting new users and generating sustainable revenue.
In this context, Bluesky announced in March the completion of a $100 million funding round that closed in 2025, giving it financial runway for experimentation and innovation — whether through Attie or through other offerings such as premium subscriptions and advanced user tools.
The Challenge of Balancing Community and Technology
This move is not without internal complexity. A significant portion of Bluesky's user base views artificial intelligence with a critical eye, for reasons ranging from economic and environmental to ethical concerns. Nevertheless, the company is striving to present a balanced model that respects its community's values while meeting the financial sustainability requirements needed to continue developing the open AT Protocol.
For now, the new version of Attie is undergoing a limited beta phase, with users being gradually invited through a waitlist over the coming weeks, while the company works on redesigning its interface and adding improved accessibility features.
