Every time we publish an article on the Redeef blog, we publish a group of designs on the blog’s social media accounts to inform followers of the presence of new content on the site. We once received an important question about these designs, and it was as follows: How do you add noises to your designs, and is there a way to add them to the video? In this article, I will try to fully answer this question, and define what Grain is, the origin of this small addition to visual content, why we might use it, and how we do so in still designs, images, and video. What is Grain? At the beginning of photography and cinematography, pictures were taken with film cameras. Film reels differed from one type to another according to their sensitivity to light. There were reels/film with a special ISO sensitivity value that was not adjustable.

When photography was being done with these cameras, whether photographic or cinematic, these films added a kind of noise to the image, as in the following image: At that time, photographers were striving to avoid that noise, but with the development of cameras from film cameras to electronic cameras, grain was no longer present in the images, and it moved from being an effect associated with the type of film itself, to being a colored noise that occurred due to an increase in electrical current on the camera sensor, which causes colored noise in the image, which is what we call the effect of ISO on images. In the video, grain is small pixels that move randomly, and they are not fixed. If the grain in the video is a fixed image or layer of pixels, it will appear in the video as if we are watching the video through a dirty glass plate.

Why is Grain used so far in...

The following video from Nerdwriter1 There is a very beautiful gesture to the importance and reason for using grain so far in films and pictures. With the development of technology and the replacement of mechanics with electronic parts, there has become a nostalgia for old pieces as part of memories. Writer James Bridle (as mentioned in the following clip) spoke about a rather strange phenomenon. As readers who used to read printed books, and moved to reading e-books, they have a nostalgia for the smell of book paper, which no one paid attention to before the existence of so-called e-books. This nostalgia is exactly what applies to photos and movies. After the existence of electronic cameras, there has become a nostalgia for the effects that old cameras add to the image, in order to create a state of comfort when viewing the photo/video with those effects. One of the reasons for using Grain is that it combines all the layers below it in an attractive way and maintains the integrity of the design/image/video as a whole.

How to add grain to images using Adobe Photoshop To add grain to designs or images using Adobe Photoshop, you must ensure that you have completed and completed the entire design/work, as the Grain layer will be above and above all the layers in the list. To add this layer, press: Ctrl + shift + N or for Mac devices com + shift + N to create a new layer. A window will appear with a set of properties. What we want is to create a medium gray layer, and set the style of that layer to Soft Light.

Once you choose the Soft Light style, you will have the option to fill this layer with medium gray. We will confirm that option by clicking on the empty box next to the written speech. We will notice after creating this layer that there has been no change in the atmosphere of the design, as if we have not done any significant work. In fact, what we have done is created a transparent layer to add effects to it to affect all subsequent layers. Now we go to the Filter menu, then choose from the Noise menu the Add Noise option, and the following window will open for us: Now the problem we have is that there is a lot of noise in the image, and it is colorful and very dense, so let us adjust a group of options to reach the correct values.

First, we will choose the Gaussian option instead of the Uniform option, then we will choose the Monochromatic option at the bottom of the window to make the noise black and white. Now we have to present the amount of noise through the slider or the clear numbers in the image above, and in fact there is no mechanism to determine the correct amount of noise, as this topic varies from image to image depending on the dimensions and the number of pixels in the design. Personally, I prefer just a little bit of noise in the image without losing any detail and without introducing any distortion into the main image.

How to add grain to the video using video editing programs. There are several ways to add grain to the video, and each method differs from one editing program to another: By Adobe Premiere By Davinci Resolve By Final Cut To here I hope that this quick article has answered the question completely. Remember that it is not necessary to use grain in a project, but remember what value it can add to the image and exploit this value according to the project you are working on.
