Meta Enters the AI Image Generation Race with a New Tool

Meta has unveiled its AI image generator "Muse Image," developed by Meta's Superintelligence Labs — the company's dedicated AI research unit. The tool, previously known internally as "Mango," is now available for free through the Meta AI app, as well as Instagram Stories and WhatsApp.

The new tool allows users to generate a wide variety of creative images and offers a set of ready-made prompts for those struggling with inspiration, designed to spark ideas and ease the creative process. Its capabilities overlap with those of leading competitors in the space, though one particular feature has drawn sharp criticism.

The Controversial Feature: Your Photos at Everyone's Disposal

What ignited the backlash is the ability to generate AI-altered images based on other users' Instagram photos simply by tagging the relevant account — provided that account is public. In other words, anyone can use your photos to produce AI-generated content without your knowledge or consent.

One user on X summed up the problem succinctly: "Dragging real users into AI-generated images without explicit consent is a privacy landmine waiting to go off."

Meta's own policy explicitly acknowledges that "others may be able to create content using your Instagram images through Meta's AI features," while noting that users "will not receive any notification about content created using these features." The company confirms that settings exist to turn this feature off, but it is enabled by default — meaning users must take deliberate steps to protect their own images.

Other, Less Controversial Applications

Setting aside the privacy debate, Muse Image offers a range of practical use cases:

• Personalized advertising: Enabling businesses to produce marketing materials with AI assistance.
• Interior design visualization: Previewing how a piece of furniture would look in your space before purchasing — a feature tied to Facebook Marketplace.
• Text-based photo editing: Removing unwanted elements from images, such as people who wandered into the frame, or generating functional QR codes.
• Instagram Stories effects: Customizable filters that modify the user's existing photos.

Meta also announced that "Muse Video," a video content generator, is currently in development.

Context That Cannot Be Ignored: Meta's Privacy Track Record

Reactions to Muse Image cannot be understood in isolation from Meta's history with user data. In 2019, the company paid a $5 billion fine to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission after it was established that Cambridge Analytica had harvested data from tens of millions of Facebook users without their knowledge and used it to target voters during the 2016 elections — with Facebook having been aware of the misuse years before it became public.

Meta also shut down its facial recognition system in 2021 under pressure from lawsuits and regulators, after it had been automatically identifying individuals in photos and videos. The tagging feature in Muse, which operates openly unless users manually disable it, reproduces the same pattern that users and oversight bodies have long criticized: leveraging people's data at scale unless they make an active choice to opt out.

Bottom Line: Innovation That Warrants Caution

Muse Image offers genuinely creative capabilities and opens new horizons in visual content generation. Yet the feature that allows others to use your photos without prior consent reignites a longstanding dilemma: striking a balance between technological innovation and protecting individuals' right to privacy. Given Meta's extensive track record on this issue, caution remains warranted — and users would be wise to review their settings before their images become fuel for algorithms they never consented to.
