A Prominent Tech Figure Enters the Commercial Space Industry

In a move bridging the worlds of artificial intelligence and the space industry, Seattle-based startup Stoke Space has announced that Kevin Weil is joining its board of directors as a director. Weil brings a distinguished background in the technology sector, having held leadership positions at notable companies including Twitter, Meta, and Planet Labs. Most recently, he served as Chief Product Officer at OpenAI until late 2025, before taking the helm of the company's scientific research acceleration initiative.

A Relationship That Started Years Ago

The connection between Weil and the company is far from new. When Andy Lapsa founded Stoke in 2020 and later joined a Y Combinator winter cohort, he had little experience raising funding and no established network in Silicon Valley. At the time, Weil and his wife Elizabeth were among the company's earliest investors through their fund, Scribble Ventures, and helped guide Lapsa in building a solid foundation for the startup.

Over the years, Lapsa has successfully raised more than $1.34 billion, including a $510 million Series D round in 2025. Both parties agreed the time was right for Weil to transition from investor to board member, supporting the company through its growth and expansion phase.

The Nova Rocket: Betting on Full Reusability

Stoke Space is aiming to achieve what no one has managed yet: building a fully and rapidly reusable rocket called Nova, capable of being launched repeatedly without replacing its components. This vision represents a qualitative leap even compared to what SpaceX has achieved with its massive Starship rocket, which has come close to this goal without fully reaching it.

Withstanding extreme heat during atmospheric reentry is the most significant challenge along this path—one that has deterred even the largest investors in the space sector. However, SpaceX's success in public markets and the rising demand for launch solutions have validated the bet Lapsa made from the very beginning.

"The world now understands that the launch problem hasn't been solved yet, and the idea of rapid full reusability is a given that no one questions anymore," says Lapsa.

Strategic Dimensions Beyond Rockets

Weil's addition opens a broader strategic horizon for Stoke Space on several fronts:

• Space-Based Data Centers: Investor interest is growing in the concept of building solar-powered data centers in space that transcend geographical and political constraints on Earth. However, the high cost of transporting processors into orbit remains the primary obstacle—which makes frequent, low-cost launches a decisive competitive advantage.
• Defense Contracts: Weil has experience bridging the gap between Silicon Valley and the U.S. military establishment, having participated in a U.S. Army Reserve program designed to foster collaboration between industry and the armed forces.
• AI Network Connections: Weil's background at OpenAI has raised questions about the possibility of a future alignment with the company, particularly given reports of Sam Altman's interest in investing in a SpaceX competitor. However, Lapsa declined to comment on such speculation, emphasizing that Weil's role is focused solely on serving Stoke.

The Real Test: Execution First

The greatest challenge facing Stoke Space remains turning ambition into tangible results. Despite substantial funding, an experienced team, and a strengthened board of directors, nothing compares to the value of a first successful launch. Lapsa knows this well:

"We've retired a lot of risk, but there's more ahead. We'll work at full capacity and won't launch until we're completely ready."
